UNITY by Sean Francisco
The word “Unity” invites so many different and varied concepts and images. Some of the best and most memorable examples are those in the aftermath of great tragedy or turmoil. Those affected unite to overcome the adversity beset them. Those who have participated in sports or orchestrated music know that it takes unity to successfully compete in a contested event or perform a complicated piece of music. Small children on a playground do not see any differences in their peers, but instead unite in imagination to act out whatever fantastical dream they envision together.
All those things are unity, but unity with Earthly boundaries and limitations. God through his son Jesus Christ, has empowered us with, and wants us to engage in a much deeper and boundless unity. This picture is so powerful to me. It is not just two different people holding hands. It is two people bonding and intertwining themselves. It harkens me back to the children’s rhyme, “here is the church, here is the steeple, open it up and look at the people”. God’s people are not a bunch of people coming to one place. God’s people are one people united with one purpose...
“Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.
So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we may be justified by faith.
Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.
So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and
female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
