ADVENTUS - Bethlehem

As I was researching the word Bethlehem, I found a huge amount of interesting information. Here are a few examples: First, the meaning of the word in Arabic, (Bayt Laḥm) is “House of Meat” and in Hebrew (Bet Leḥem) is “House of Bread” This brought to mind our “Bread of Life” – Jesus and how He brings us Eternal Life when we believe in Him Thank you, Jesus!!! Second, Bethlehem is known as the “City of David” because it is the hometown of King David and also the place of his anointing by the prophet Samuel. Jesus is a descendant of King David and was born in the “City of David”. Third, there are references to Bethlehem in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. It was first mentioned in Genesis 35:19, as the burial site of Rachel, Jacob’s favored wife. In Micah 5:2-5 the prophet foretold that the Messiah would come from the small and seemingly insignificant town of Bethlehem. In the New Testament, the books of Matthew, Luke, and John report that Jesus was born in the humble town of Bethlehem.

As I sorted through the information about Bethlehem the song “O Little Town of Bethlehem” kept coming to mind and I would start singing it. So I looked up and words and really paid attention to what the words were saying. As it tells the story of how the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ came quietly into this world, it paints a vision of a quiet and peaceful town. Below are the words to the song. Take a few minutes and dwell on the words and think about what it means to be true believers in the salvation that Baby Jesus would bring to all of us!!!
