As Jesus progress through the Beatitudes, it becomes clear that He is focusing on our character more than on rituals or standards of purity. These "blessings" that Jesus describes cut to the very core of who we are, make us squirm and often ignore them mere poetic theology. Jesus makes it clear that the Children of God, restored and redeemed, will be known by their ability to be peace makers. This means setting aside our petty grievances, bigotry and animosity, and focus on the relationship.
We live, it is said, in a culture of outrage where everyone is angry about something. In this new environment, Jesus words are more important than ever.
